Best Cat Litter For Multiple Cats

If you are anything like me one cat is just not enough. I have two. Having multiple cats, however, does require rethinking some of the things that you have for your cats like feeding and litter box.

Tidy Cats from Purina is what we use at home. I have been using this cat litter for a few years now and it really does work. It’s also lightweight so you don’t go through it as fast. OI usually buy the big 11kg box and it lasts a while.

You can get it in different scents but honestly the non-scented is the best. And it doesn’t smell and it doesn’t really track.

Purina Tidy Cats Multi Cat, Low Dust, Clumping Cat Litter, LightWeight 4-in-1 Strength – 17 lb. Box
  • One (1) 17 lb. Box – Purina Tidy Cats Multi Cat, Low Dust, Clumping Cat Litter, LightWeight 4-in-1 Strength
  • Tidy Cats 4-in-1 Strength clumping cat litter attacks and neutralizes urine, fecal, ammonia and bacterial odors on litter, while the tight, strong clumps make for easy scooping
  • Featuring a complex floral scent, this low dust litter allows for a clean, easy pour, while the lightweight formula means less weight, not less litter
  • Designed to accommodate multiple cats, this multi cat litter features an Ammonia Blocker to prevent ammonia odor from forming for 14 days when used as directed
  • Powerfully absorbent scoopable litter to keep your cats dry and comfortable

So…What is the best cat litter for multiple cats?

The best cat litter for multiple cats is Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter. The reason it is the best is that it is hypoallergenic and contains no plant proteins, perfumes, or deodorants. Its Multi-cat formula and superior odour control means your home will smell clean and fresh. It also is an all-natural product that prevents moisture from reaching the bottom of the litter box or tray.

What is cat litter anyway?

Cat litter was invented to help domestic cats have a clean and sanitary living environment. My mom always told me it was so the cat didn’t pee in the plants.

Cat litter is either clay, silica or some other biodegradable product that absorbs cat waste. Its main purpose is to give the cat a place to go to the bathroom and keep the house clean.

Some Runners up

What are some different types of litter?

  1. Non-clumping conventional litter. This type of cat litter is made from traditional absorbent clay was the gold standard for several decades and pet owners still use it a lot these days. Traditional clay litter needs to be scooped every day and completely replaced about once a week.
  2. Clumping Cat Litter. In the early 1990 clumping litter became available. It was great because of its ability to form clumps upon contact with moisture. The main difference between the two lies in how the litter box is maintained. Clumping litter is easier to remove from the box. Clumping litter, however, has Calcium Bentonite in it. This chemical can be toxic, is harder on the environment to create. According to the American Chemical Society, scooping only the clumps out of the box should keep it clean for two to four weeks, assuming additional litter is added regularly.
  3. Biodegradable litter. Biodegradable litters are made from various plant resources, including pine wood pellets, recycled newspaper, clumping sawdust, Brazilian cassava, corn, wheat, walnuts, barley, soy pulp[7] and dried orange peel. This type of litter is generally more expensive and not always available to the public.
  4. Silica gel litter often referred to as “crystal litter”, is a porous granular form of silicon dioxide, has the highest absorbency of any litter, and has excellent moisture control and complete odour elimination for an extended period of time compared to other litters. This type of litter needs to be replaced about once a week. When it comes to dealing with cat waste both silica and clay are pretty much the same, but silica may be more earth-friendly, albeit more expensive.

All of these cat litter types will work in most cat litter boxes and even cat carrier litter box combos.

What about for Ragdolls?

I have two ragdolls. I also have multiple litter boxes and have tried a number of different types of litter.

and have tried a number of different types of litter.

My senior cat pees a little bit more than my younger cat so she needs a little more litter than normal to keep things the way they need to be.

Ragdolls are bigger cats in general so it is a good idea to have bigger litter boxes and more litter in general with ragdoll cats. I have heard that it is also a good idea to have more litter boxes than cats so they have variety. I have found that multiple litter boxes is definitely a good idea and something you should explore.

It is sometimes tough to find appropriate places for the litter box, especially if you have small children and dogs. But with proper planning and maybe even some creative cat doors you should be able to accommodate multiple litter boxes.
